ONCE AGAIN, THE HOLY TRINITY TEAM set the pace for the The Johnson County Relay for Life on Saturday, April 7th. We fielded the largest team of any organization (65 donors and walkers) and contributed over $3,000 of the $25,000 total raised. Way to go - and thanks to Steve Roland for his leadership!
NOT ONLY THAT, but April 7 was also the date of our most recent meal-packing event for "Meals fro the Heartland." Together, over 300 volunteers worked to pack and send 60,048 meals to be distributed globally where the need is greatest. Many thanks to Patrick Schwickerath and our High School youth for their capable guidance of this effort again this year!
#PRAYFASTACT According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 13.5 percent of Americans live in poverty. To address the challenges of life in poverty, the U.S. Congress appropriates funds for critical domestic human needs programs. While churches and charities are essential allies in combating poverty in the U.S., private funds only account for roughly 5 percent of the total food assistance delivered in the United States. The remaining balance is covered by the federal government, and these federal programs are an important social safety net for low-income, at-risk or transitioning individuals and families. The federal budget represents our collective values and priorities as a nation. We support and urge Congress to craft a fiscal plan that reflects ELCA social commitments by ensuring a “sufficient, sustainable livelihood for all.” To this end, as Lutherans, we can engage the federal budget appropriations process by urging policymakers to draw a circle of protection around domestic human needs programs. We are thus encouraging all Holy Trinity members to consider joining an ecumenical effort to highlight the need for hunger advocacy by joining in #PrayFastAct, an intentional 24-hour fast on the 21st of each month. Jim and Barb Aldeman are already leading our effort at Holy Trinity. Will you consider joining them this month?
